Best gardens and arboretums

It is a delightful time of year to visit some gardens. The spring flowers are blooming in full force. The weather is slowly warming. This spring, consider taking a day trip to view some of the world class gardens on the NC coast.

Here are a few of our favorites:

Airlie Gardens

300 Airlie Rd, Wilmington, NC

Hours: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Advance tickets are required. $5-$9.

The garden’s springtime blooms are in full effect from mid-March to mid-April. They have over 75,000 azaleas and 60,000 spring bulbs.

The Elizabethan Gardens

1411 National Park Drive, Manteo, NC

Daily Admission Tickets: $11.

Tryon Palace Gardens

16 acres of colonial revival gardens at North Carolina’s First Capitol.

Outer Banks Arboretum and Teaching Garden

300 Mustian St, Kill Devil Hills, NC


The Outer Banks Arboretum is a small, quiet getaway to have a quick commune in nature. They have free access 365 days a year with trails, a sensory garden, native plants and a butterfly highway.

Brunswick County Botanical Garden

25 Referendum Dr., Bolivia, NC


16 separate gardens including an Azalea garden and a Live Oak garden.
